One of the major aims of the smart cities project is to make sure that India is able to deal well with this huge influx of people. Andhra Pradesh had proposed to implement as many as 51 projects under ‘Smart City’ initiative of which nearly 17 have been completed.
AP Completes 17 Projects Under Smart City Initiative. Municipal Commissioner M. Hari Narayanan, reported that the projects were estimated at the cost of Rs1610.9 cr, and nearly Rs111.58 cr have been spent to complete these 17 projects.
He further said that 10 projects worth Rs. 314.55 crore were under progress. Of the projects, 25 were pan-city and 26 under area-based development (ADB) and were to be executed over five years. Among the smart city works include proper water supply, sewerage, smart streets, green space development, underground cabling, shore protection, beach-front development.
Under A.P. Disaster Recovery Project, beach-front development is proposed to be done at a cost of Rs. 390 crore and the detailed project reports are under preparation.
Several initiative were taken under the programmes such as Swachh Bharat, Swachh Andhra Corporation and Swachh Visakha, which led the city to be declared as open defecation-free and getting fifth rank in the Swachh Survekshan in 2016 and emerging the third cleanest city in 2017. An action plan was being prepared to improve the position from the seventh in 2018.
The city also has got national recognition with its getting receiving an award under the ‘Social Aspects’ category for development of smart and digital classrooms.
Meanwhile, VUDA Vice-Chairman P. Basanth Kumar called upon employees to adapt themselves to discharge responsibilities under the expanded Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority. The staff should play their role in making the city garbage-free .
The implementation of the smart cities mission is being done by a city-level special purpose vehicle (SPV) incorporated under the Companies Act, 2013. Read more
