An initiative by globally run NGO wanted to run vocational training courses for the kids of the communities, maintained and operated by locals, across the rural areas of the state of Maharashtra. They wanted to design a module of 1500-2000sqft, mobile, easily demountable center that could be relocated at various locations as and when required.

Concept Note
We encountered a few challenges such as special design terms, client visions, financial and time constraints and special requirements of construction, in turn, became the main influential factors in the design process.

In order to give tribute to the natural environment, against being placed at varied locations, necessity of using recyclable materials, economical and minimalist choice of used materials, rapid sustaining construction, philosophy implicating modern nomadism as paradigms, use of Shipping container architecture was proposed to Client. It gets a lot of encouraging coverage in the design world as a trendy alternative to traditional building materials and seems like a smart choice for people looking for rapid construction and deconstruction. After reviewing the details, it got on the agenda.

As we wanted it “For the people, by the people”, meant to serve a large variety of different functions for their development, we mandate the orientation to be aligned in such way that longer facades would be along north and south, benefitting the climate in any hot and dry climate of Maharashtra, soothing the indoor environment.

Design Process
The initial design progressed by placing the blocks next to each other at length and depth with minimum interference in their basic structure, also could be divided into smaller portions as and when required. The module would be built on the pod with minimum excavation and disruption to a place.

As this module would function as a community training centre, from early childhood development to workshops, to community meeting space, we intended to place central four blocks raised over the other blocks, formulating a central core space as a respite. This would aid in cross ventilation, play in movement within and connecting modules at lower and give them semi-open outdoor multipurpose space. It also helped in placing certain services like outdoor units and water tanks at the roof of the lower level, thus reducing the expand of footprint at the ground.

Exposed Staircase feature was removed at one end depicting the career ladder for the kids of a guild, ready to build. Sun-breakers were proposed at south and west façade by the local crates available and as the containers had special condition of having side opening, the door was integrated into the design to pivot the sun-breakers and provide shade at south façade as well.  The roof was redesigned and extended as a canopy to the passageway above to stimulate the climatic conditions. To engage the people mainly targeting kids, NGO logo inspired us to use the vibrant colours over skin and doors of the module. The minimalistic interiors were designed to be adaptive to any function happening within.
